Tyler Loschen, of rural Kempton, is one of four finalists for one of the highest awards of the National FFA Organization — the American Star Farmer award.

A senior at the University of Illinois, he also is involved in commercial agricultural production and FFA projects in corn, soybeans, forage crops, beef, swine and crop research. He will compete in Louisville, Ky., in late October, where the national winner will be selected.

Each star finalist receives $2,000 from the National FFA Foundation and earns the opportunity to participate in an international experience tour to Costa Rica. The winner will receive an additional $2,000.

Tyler is the son of Gary and Diana Loschen, of rural Kempton. He is a student in agriculture and consumer economics at the U of I. His mother is the vocational agriculture teacher and FFA adviser at Tri-Point High School, in Cullom, where Tyler graduated in 2010.

Kemp wants Braun stripped of MVP award

TORONTO — Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp, who finished runner-up to Ryan Braun in voting for the 2011 National League Most Valuable Player award, thinks the suspended Milwaukee Brewers slugger should be stripped of the honor.

Braun finished with 388 points and 20 first-place votes, to 332 and 10 for Kemp. Major League Baseball attempted to suspend Braun following a positive test that October for elevated testosterone, but the penalty was overturned by an arbitrator who ruled Braun’s urine sample was handled improperly.

Braun agreed Monday to a 65-game suspension for unspecified violations of baseball’s drug rules and labor contract.

Asked Tuesday whether the award should be taken away from Braun, Kemp responded: “I mean, yeah, I do,” pausing and adding, “I feel like it should be, but that’s not for me to decide, you know?”
