Clarke leads Australia to ODI win

Second One-day international, Emirates Old Trafford:

Australia 315-7 (50 overs) beat England 227 (44.2 overs) by 88 runs

Michael Clarke scored a century as Australia beat England by 88 runs in the second one-day international to go 1-0 up in the five-match series.

After Friday's opening match was washed out, the visiting skipper's 105 from 102 balls helped his side to 315-7.

George Bailey supported Clarke with 82 off 67 balls to hand Australia a best ODI score against England in the UK.

Kevin Pietersen, Eoin Morgan and Jos Buttler made fifties but the hosts were dismissed for 227 with 5.4 overs left.

"That is a thrashing. England were always going to struggle when they had to chase over 300. The first 10 overs with Mitchell Johnson getting the two wickets, England only flickered. If Kevin Pietersen stayed in longer, anything was possible. Morgan and Buttler played well but there was nothing else to trouble the Aussies. An emphatic victory for Michael Clarke's men and England will have to put their thinking caps on. That was some hiding."

England named a strong batting line-up with Ben Stokes at number eight but were arguably a bowler light, relying on Ravi Bopara and Joe Root to deliver 12 overs.

But Morgan's side got off to a good start when Steve Finn dismissed Shaun Marsh caught behind with only the fourth ball of the match.

There was controversy as Shane Watson was adjudged lbw the very next ball, but reprieved by the Decision Review System when third umpire Aleem Dar viewed that the Australian number three had edged it.

Watson was eventually out for 38 to Bopara, as England opted to review Richard Kettleborough's not out decision and Dar ruled there had been an edge to Buttler.

Aaron Finch made 45 before holing out off James Tredwell, although it was England's spinner who was repeatedly punished on a good pitch by Clarke and Bailey.

The pair were in breathtaking form as they put on 155 for the fourth wicket to take the game away from England.

Bailey struck four sixes before eventually falling to Bopara down the leg side while Clarke nicked behind to Boyd Rankin not long after completing his first one-day international century against England and eighth in all.

Opener Michael Carberry, making his home ODI debut, struggled before picking out Clarke at backward point off an inspired Mitchell Johnson for just four and Jonathan Trott departed in the same over for a duck attempting to fend off a wicked lifting delivery.

After Joe Root was bowled by James Faulkner, Pietersen, appearing for the first time as a ODI opener on home soil, gave England a glimmer of hope with two sixes in his 66-ball knock.

But once he fell to Watson for 60 it was game over with Bopara falling caught and bowled to Adam Voges before Morgan went for 54, caught in the deep to give Clint McKay a deserved first wicket.

Although Buttler scored a defiant 75 off 65 balls before giving Fawad Ahmed his first ODI wicket against England, the hosts were bowled out for just 227 and will head to Edgbaston on Wednesday with plenty of food for thought.

Northeast leads Kent to Cardiff win

Kent 175 & 242-3 beat Glamorgan 158 & 258 by seven wickets

Sam Northeast led the way with 88 as Kent beat Glamorgan by seven wickets at Cardiff for only their second County Championship win this summer.

The hosts could only add 21 to their overnight score and were all out for 258, leaving Kent a target of 242.

Northeast, who recently signed a new contract, had a century in his sights when he became Dean Cosker's 500th first-class victim for Glamorgan.

Brendan Nash then saw the visitors home on 242-3 with an unbeaten 70.

Kent's only previous Championship win of the summer came against Gloucestershire in July.

However, they showed no sign of succumbing to nerves in their run-chase as Michael Hogan, the spearhead of Glamorgan's attack, had a rare wicket-less day.

Northeast's innings was the highest of a low scoring match and a good way to celebrate extending his stay with his home county, but was six short of his season's best when Cosker bowled him, having previously had Daniel Bell-Drummond caught behind..

With Northeast gone, Nash was in no mood to hang about and struck 10 boundaries in his 77-ball knock to finish the job.

"Based on this performance, it seems surprising that this was only Kent's second championship win of the summer.

"Everyone contributed, the bowlers took 20 wickets and the batsmen, through sheer patience and application, scored runs.

"After the trials and tribulations thrown up by a seamer-friendly pitch on the first two days, Kent took advantage when it flattened out on day three, and ran out winners at a canter, with skipper Geraint Jones declaring afterwards that just about everything had gone to plan during the game."

Gallichan leads Jersey to ICC win

Luke Gallichan was named man of the match after his excellent display

Youngster Luke Gallichan led the way as Jersey sealed a six-wicket victory over Kuwait in their Division Six ICC World Cricket League opener.

Gallichan made an unbeaten 72 from 114 balls - including seven boundaries - as his side reached their target of 180.

The 18-year-old came in with Jersey struggling on 8-2 in the third over, but his 97-run partnership with Corey Bisson steadied the ship for his side.

"Luke's performance was sensational today," said Jersey coach Craig Hogan.

"To be told that he was going to be sent in as a 'lunch watchman', and to bat the way that he did and carry his bat was brilliant. I'm very proud of him.

"I thought we played well in the latter half of the game but we started poorly. We didn't bowl in the areas we needed to on this sort of wicket and it was disappointing that Kuwait were able to get away from us early on.

"But we would've taken 180 at the start of the day and we took some really good catches and bowled in better areas in the middle overs."

Jersey's Andrew Dewhurst joined Gallichan at the crease and made an unbeaten 33 from 35 balls to see Jersey over the line in the 42nd over.

Earlier, Jersey, who are hosting the tournament, bowled Kuwait out for 179 in 39.5 overs with Tom Minty making a valuable contribution by removing Kuwait dangermen Muhammed Khan and Kashif Sherif.

The big-hitting South African also hit five fours in his 43-ball knock but Northants were restricted to 137-6.

Andre Russell looked to be guiding Worcestershire to victory but once he fell for 44 the innings faded.

With 21 needed off the final over, Joe Leach hit a four and a six off Lee Daggett, but it was not quite enough.

Levi, who scored 110 not out against Gloucestershire last week, hit Leach for three sixes in a row as he raced to his half-century.

But once he fell to Gareth Andrew's first ball the rest of the innings stuttered as Northants could only muster 35 off their last six overs.

Worcestershire lost three quick wickets as they fell to 35-3 but captain Daryl Mitchell and Russell put on 64 for the fourth wicket.

David Willey (3-13) took the crucial wicket of West Indian Russell and Mohammad Azharullah chipped in with 2-22 as Mitchell was left stranded on 38 not out.

The win means Northants stretch their lead at the top of the Midlands, Wales & West Group to four points and are all but certain to qualify for the quarter-finals.

Worcestershire sit bottom with just two wins from their six games.
