Adams double ton blunts Northants

Hampshire skipper Jimmy Adams emulated Rob Keogh's double century earlier in the game as Northants endured a day of toil in the field at Southampton.Adams passed 200 for the second time this summer with a six off James Middlebrook as the home side reached 515-9, a lead of 77, at the close.
He also hit 35 fours before falling to Matt Spriegel for 218 late in the day.
Neil McKenzie (52) helped add 102 for the third wicket and Michael Bates (71) shared in a stand of 152.
With a draw now certain barring a surprise turn of events on the final day, the pressure will intensify on second-placed Northants as Essex, the team immediately below them, closed the points gap by wrapping up an innings victory over Leicestershire.
Their attack was generally tidy, but received little assistance from the pitch and they gave away 56 runs in extras and five penalty runs when wicketkeeper threw a glove at the ball and hit it.
After Hampshire added 105 runs during the morning for the loss of McKenzie, who was bowled by Azharullah, Steven Crook and Trent Copeland accounted for Sean Ervine (22) and Adam Wheater (19) after lunch, but Adams and Bates were together for 41 overs to see their side into the lead.
Bates was eventually caught by Copeland at point, cutting at a ball from Azharullah, prompting a brief flurry of wickets that saw Matt Coles and Adams, who batted for nine and a half hours and fell one run short of equalling his best score of the summer, departing.
Play came to an end when Ruel Brathwaite gave a return catch to off-spinner James Middlebrook.

NEW YORK, Sept 3 (Reuters) - Defending champion Serena Williams walloped Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro 6-0 6-0 to race into the semi-finals of the U.S. Open on Tuesday.
Top seed Williams served up the dreaded "double-bagel" in a quick-fire 52 minutes to set up a clash with fifth seed Li Na, who earlier became China's first U.S. Open semi-finalist by beating Russian Ekaterina Makarova.
"Honestly she's a great player," said Williams, blaming windy conditions for the Spaniard's plight on her 25th birthday.
"The conditions today were so tough. It was not her best tennis today."
The outcome may have been more about the world number one being at something close to her best, however.
Williams won 88 percent of her first serves, rifled in four aces, smacked 20 winners to three for her opponent, and won 53 points to just 18 for the 18th seed.
"I played really good. I was just more focused than anything," she added, stopping short of calling it her best. "I like to believe there is room for improvement."
It was only the second love-love victory in a U.S. Open women's quarter-final dating back to 1968, and first since Martina Navratilova subjected Manuela Maleeva of Bulgaria to the same embarrassment in 1989.
At 31, Williams is campaigning to become the oldest U.S. Open women's winner since tennis turned professional in 1968.
She has lost just 13 games from her five matches so far and said she has been balancing fun with work at Flushing Meadows.
"I'm having a blast this week," said Serena, who is also still alive in women's doubles with older sister Venus.
"I have just really been enjoying my matches. For me, I have to stay in that moment of fun, but intensity, but calm. If I can try to do those three things, it works out."
Suarez Navarro's consolation was a $325,000 check for being eliminated from her first U.S. Open quarter-final.
"I just want to go there and enjoy, but Serena was playing really, really good. I do everything I can," she said.
The Spaniard, who had ousted eighth-seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany in the fourth round, said the blustery conditions had made her task even more difficult.
"Serena is a strong player. When I play with the wind against me, I have no chance," said Suarez Navarro, who had hoped to rebound after the lightning-quick, 19-minute first set.
"I was thinking the situation can change, another set is a new set. But obviously, no."

US Open - Azarenka dishes out double bagel
In her first match back on the Arthur Ashe Stadium since her gut-wrenching loss to Serena Williams, Azarenka chalked up a rare double-bagel win, thrashing Germany's Dinah Pfizenmaier 6-0 6-0 in just over an hour.
"I'm really happy to be back on this court, the last time I was here it was very emotional," she said.
"To come back and compete at one of the most famous arenas in the world, it's great ... I love New York."
The world number two arrived in the Big Apple brimming with confidence after beating Williams in the final of the Cincinnati Open and was untroubled against Pfizenmaier, ranked 99th.
She hit 14 winners and made just 10 unforced errors but had to fend off three break points on her own serve.
"It was a lot closer than the score," Azarenka said. "I thought I played really well in the important moments and raised my game when I needed to."
Azarenka was just two points away from beating Williams in last year's championship match when the American drew on her all her experience to win a three-set thriller.
It was a painful loss for the fiercely competitive Belarusian but she showed she was quick learner, overcoming her disappointment and rebounding to win her second Australian Open title in January.

Case against Hernandez in '12 double murder gaining strength
ATTLEBORO, Mass. - The case against former Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez regarding his possible role in a 2012 double homicide is gaining strength as a grand jury has begun listening to prosecutors lay out the links between Hernandez and the murders behind closed doors.
Hernandez, who is already being held in prison without bail for allegedly killing 27-year-old Odin Lloyd, is the focus of the separate grand jury probe, according to the Boston Globe.
Boston police made a possible connection between Hernandez and the double slaying after he became a suspect in the Lloyd murder. Hernandez has pleaded not guilty in the Lloyd case. He is due in Attleboro District Court for a probable cause hearing on Wednesday.
The victims of the double murder - Safiro Furtado and Daniel Abreu - were shot in the early hours of July 16, 2012.
The killings occurred in the South End district of Boston when an unknown person in a sport utility vehicle with Rhode Island license plates pulled up next to their car and began firing.
Hernandez, 23, was awarded a five-year contract extension worth up to $40 million by the Patriots a month after the double murder. He was released by the team within two hours of being arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the death of Lloyd.
Hernandez’s former teammates commence training camp later this week.
While Hernandez's appears in court Wednesday, Patriots coach Bill Belichick is scheduled to address reporters for the first time since Hernandez's arrest.
