NEW YORK, Sept 8 (Reuters) - A battling Victoria Azarenka won a second-set tiebreaker 8-6 over Serena Williams to send the U.S. Open women's final to a third set.

After losing the first set 7-5 on a windblown Arthur Ashe Stadium court, Azarenka found herself down 4-1 with defending champion Williams serving.

The determined Belarussian, who had double-faulted three times in losing her serve in the fifth game, broke the big-serving American three times to take the set to a tiebreaker.

Williams, who twice served to win the match, double-faulted on the last point of the game that made it 6-6 and forced the tiebreaker.

World number one Williams rushed out to a 3-1 lead in the decider, but the second-seeded Azarenka won five of the next six points to take charge at 6-4 before taking the tiebreaker when Williams belted a backhand too long.

NEW YORK, Sept 8 (Reuters) - Serena Williams repeated as U.S. Open women's champion by holding off a battling Victoria Azarenka of Belarus 7-5 6-7(6) 6-1 in a windblown final at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sunday.

Williams bounded in a series of joyous jumping jack leaps after Azarenka's backhand sailed long on the second match point of a thrilling, two-hour 45-minute final.

In winning the title rematch against second-seeded Azarenka, world number one Williams claimed her fifth U.S. Open crown and 17th career grand slam singles title.

The big-hitting American, who turns 32 later this month, became the oldest U.S. Open women's winner since tennis turned professional 45 years ago, eclipsing Australian Margaret Court, who was 31 years and 55 days when she won the title in 1973.

The triumph moved Williams to within one grand slam singles crown of Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova for a tie for fourth place on the all-time list behind Court (24), Steffi Graf (22) and Helen Wills Moody (19).

It had looked like it was going to be plain sailing for Williams after she won the first set, boosted by a late break in the 11th game for a 6-5 lead and then served out a love game.

Williams, who earlier looked confounded by the gusty wind that affected service tosses and the direction of bounces off groundstrokes and was muttering to herself between points, finally settled into a rhythm in the second set.

She surged to a 4-1 lead after Azarenka double-faulted three times in the fifth and her U.S. Open repeat looked undeniable as she had begun to find the range on her imposing service game that saw her serve broken only twice in six previous matches.

'GREAT MATCH'

But the Belarusian showed her fight and took advantage of a string of Williams errors to break right back for 4-2 and rode that momentum.

Twice Williams served for the match, at 5-4 and again at 6-5, but Azarenka rose up to defeat the American's serve and force a tiebreaker.

Williams raced to a 3-1 lead in the decider, but Azarenka won five of the next six points to seize a 6-4 lead and send the championship match to a third set when Williams belted a backhand long to lose it 8-6.

The third set stayed on serve until the fourth game when another double fault, her seventh of the match, sank Azarenka and handed Williams a 3-1 lead.

With the stadium crowd roaring their support for home-country favorite Williams, the American broke Azarenka two games later for good measure to make it 5-1 and then claimed victory when the Belarusian sent a backhand long on the second match point.

"Victoria, you played unbelievable," said Williams at the trophy ceremony.

"What a great match and what a great person. Vika is such a great opponent, she's such a great fighter. It was never over until match point," added Williams.

The top seed collected the $2.6 million top prize and pocketed an addition $1 million bonus for having won the U.S. Open run-up series of tournaments.

Azarenka said she had been beaten by the better player.

"It is a tough loss. But the best player deserves the win today. I gave it all again this year," said Azarenka, who lost 7-5 in the third set to Williams in last year's final.

"We gave it everything we got."

NEW YORK, Sept 4 (Reuters) - Flavia Pennetta reached her first grand slam semi-finals and Richard Gasquet booked a long awaited return to the last four of a major in a pair of upsets at the U.S. Open on Wednesday.

Pennetta, 31, was the last Italian standing in a U.S. Open women's draw that has been dominated by the old guard after upsetting 10th-seeded compatriot Roberta Vinci 6-4 6-1.

Eight-seeded Frenchman Gasquet advanced to the semi-finals stage for the first time since the 2007 Wimbledon championships, when he ousted Spanish fourth seed David Ferrer 6-3 6-1 4-6 2-6 6-3 in a thrilling encounter.

It was the second successive five-set victory for the 27-year-old Gasquet, who won 7-5 in the final set of a marathon fourth-round match against big-serving Canadian Milos Raonic.

Gasquet, who had lost eight of nine previous matches against Ferrer, will meet the winner of the all-Spaniard match between second seed Rafa Nadal and Tommy Robredo that was closing Wednesday's night programme at Arthur Ashe.

For Pennetta, who overcame surgery on her right wrist that kept her out of last year's tournament, the victory put her in the last four against second seed Victoria Azarenka or 30-year-old Daniela Hantuchova, who were set to play on Wednesday night.

A U.S. Open record five 30-somethings had reached the last 16, including 30-year-old Vinci, and Pennetta's victory made it at least a trio into the semi-finals.

The semi-final for the other half of the draw is set with top-seeded defending champion Serena Williams going against fellow 31-year-old Li Na of China.

"I think we just keep playing. Before the career of the woman was shorter, they retired early," Pennetta said about the rise of the 30-somethings at Flushing Meadows.

"It's good to stay physical, in a good way, and play this good tennis at this age. I'm proud of me now."

NERVOUS WIND

Playing in just the second grand slam quarter-final of his career, 27-year-old Gasquet used his trademark one-handed backhand to near perfection as he closed out Ferrer in three hours and 23 minutes.

"I thought he was a little bit nervous in the wind, so I played on that," said Gasquet. "I was a little bit tired but the last game was amazing for me. It's wonderful for me to be in the semis. It means a lot."

Gasquet broke the Spaniard, a model of consistency with trips to the quarters or better in the last eight slams, when he double faulted on break point to seize a 4-2 lead in the fifth set and ended it with a bristling forehand for his 52nd winner.

"He had a bad game at 3-2 for me. I was a little nervous about getting into the semis at the U.S. Open, but I did it. Was a big win for me," he said.

The good-natured match between the Italian friends and Fed Cup team mates who have competed against one another since they were 10 turned into a rout by the second set, which Pennetta raced through in 24 minutes against an error-prone Vinci.

"It was of course a special day for us," said Vinci, who is part of the world number one ranked women's doubles team with fellow Italian Sara Errani, and still busy defending their U.S. Open double title.

"Is a great chance to go to the semi-final. This time she won, but I think that I'm happy, too, about this tournament."

STRONG HISTORY

Pennetta, ranked 83rd as she works her way back up the rankings, continued a strong history of success at Flushing Meadows.

After advancing the quarters in 2008, 2009 and 2011, Pennetta has not dropped a set in her march to the semi-finals, dropping just 25 games in her five victories.

"I don't know. I just enjoy to play here," she said.

Pennetta induced 28 unforced errors from Vinci, who kept pressing the action without great success, winning just 18 of 34 points she contested at the net.

Their quarter of their draw was something of a festival for the Italians.

In playing Pennetta, Vinci was facing her third successive compatriot, having beaten unseeded Camila Giorgi and Karin Knapp in previous rounds.

Pennetta eliminated fourth seed Errani in the second round.

NEW YORK, Sept 4 (Reuters) - Second seed Victoria Azarenka punished a series of errors by Daniela Hantuchova to win 6-2 6-3 on Wednesday and set up a U.S. Open semi-final clash with Italy's Flavia Pennetta.

Belarusian Azarenka, the beaten finalist at Flushing Meadows last year, took control after breaking the Slovak with a superb backhand to go 5-2 up in the first set.

Hantuchova, ranked 48th in the world, made a determined start to the second set though, holding her serve and then going 2-0 up, breaking thanks to well-placed volley.

But Azarenka, who has reached the quarter-finals or better in eight of the last 11 grand slams, hit back immediately with a break which rattled her opponent, who proceeded to make a series of unforced errors.

Azarenka had three break points in the fifth game but lost them all, only for Hantuchova to double-fault twice at deuce and gift her the game and a 3-2 lead.

The Belarusian had service struggles of her own and gave Hantuchova a glimmer of hope with a double-fault that gave up a break to make it 5-3, but again the Slovak was unable to capitalize and Azarenka ran out the comfortable winner.

"It was a little bit tricky out there with the wind and Daniela is the kind of player who doesn't give you much rhythm," said the former world number one.

"So you really have to try to make it happen in one or two shots in the beginning, so that's what I was trying to do."

It was a disjointed game in many respects, which Azarenka said hampered her ability to find her flow.

"There weren't many long rallies and that sometimes makes it more difficult to get into the match. But I felt like I was really good in the important moments," she added.

"In the first set, towards the end, I really raised my level to where I wanted to and that was the key to this match."

Hantuchova, who was in her first U.S. Open grand slam quarter-final since 2002, knows she will need to find greater consistency and limit her errors if she is to go further next time.

"I didn't feel like I played my best tennis today, which is unfortunate because I had many chances and didn't hold my serves when I needed to," she told Reuters.

"Throughout the whole tournament my serve was working great but just not tonight.

"I am very disappointed with the performance, because I know what I can do and how I can play. I came into the match feeling confident, it just didn't work out today."

NEW YORK, Sept 4 (Reuters) - Victoria Azarenka struck a blow for the younger generation by beating Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia 6-2 6-3 to join a trio of 31-year-olds in the semi-finals of the U.S. Open on Wednesday.

The 24-year-old Belarusian, the second seed and runner-up last year, will play unseeded Italian Flavia Pennetta, while defending champion Serena Williams meets Li Na of China in Friday's semi-finals.

Pennetta reached her first grand slam semi-final on Wednesday by beating longtime friend and Fed Cup team mate Roberta Vinci, the 10th-seeded 30-year-old, 6-4 6-1.

On the men's side second seed Rafa Nadal continued his remarkable 2013 form, improving his hardcourt record to 20-0 with a 6-0 6-2 6-2 hammering of fellow Spaniard Tommy Robredo.

Next up for Nadal is France's Richard Gasquet, who will be playing in the semi-final stage of a slam for the first time since Wimbledon in 2007.

Azarenka is well aware she is battling the 'old guard' in last four.

"I'm a baby, what can I say?" she added. "It's amazing to see such great players in the semi-finals."

The victory moved Australian Open champion Azarenka one step closer to a possible Arthur Ashe Stadium rematch against Williams for the title.

"It's amazing to see athletes doing so well, their careers longer so fans and themselves can enjoy their careers much better," she said. "Everybody looks much fitter, really taking care of their body and taking the sport to the next level."

Robredo had spoiled what would have been the first meeting at the U.S. Open between Nadal and all-time grand slam king Roger Federer after the 31-year-old Spaniard sent the Swiss master packing in straight sets in the fourth round.

Nadal, who has come back from knee injuries that sidelined him for seven months to win nine tournaments including his eighth French Open for his 12th grand slam crown, bounded for joy after steamrolling another opponent at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

"I think I played my best match in the U.S. Open this year," said 2010 U.S. Open winner Nadal, who has lost just one set from five matches. "Playing a little bit better every day is great."

STEEP HILL

Eighth-seeded Gasquet booked his long awaited return to the last four of a men's slam with a 6-3 6-1 4-6 2-6 6-3 upset of fourth seed David Ferrer of Spain.

NEW YORK, Sept 3 (Reuters) - Top seed Novak Djokovic demolished unseeded Spaniard Marcel Granollers 6-3 6-0 6-0 on Tuesday to charge into the quarter-finals of the U.S. Open.

Djokovic, the 2011 U.S. Open champion and runner-up last year, won the last 13 games to finish off the fourth-round match in 79 minutes.

The 26-year-old Serb was dominant in every phase and excelled particularly from the service line, winning the first 25 points of the match on his serve.

"I played one of the better matches I've ever played here in my life," the world number one, who has yet to lose a set in the tournament, said on court. "I had everything working, every part of my game and that's a great encouragement."

Djokovic advanced to a quarter-finals clash against Russia's Mikhail Youzhny, a 6-3 3-6 6-7(3) 6-4 7-5 winner against Australian Lleyton Hewitt.

"Today, the second and third set have been some of the best tennis that I've played on Arthur Ashe in my career," said Djokovic, who has flashed some wondrous form on the centre court over the years.

"I was wishing to be more aggressive as the tournament progresses and to be able to stay committed to play every point, to win every point, regardless of what's the score."

Djokovic was sublime from the service line, winning the first 25 points on his serve despite notching only two aces in the whirlwind victory.

The world number one cracked 34 winners, dividing them almost evenly between both wings and won a remarkable 28 of 30 points he contested at the net.

Djokovic said he has been spending a lot of time on varying his attack and improving his net play.

"I know I can defend well and I have a good transition, but also it's obvious that my game is based on a baseline," he said. "I have many opportunities during the match to come to the net and finish out the point earlier.

"That's one of the things on the practice agenda that we have with our team. We are working on the serve, getting more precise, efficient, and using the opportunities to just make a winner and come to the net.

The new-look Djokovic, rushing to the net to finish off quick points, could prove to be an undeniable force as he takes aim on a second U.S. Open title.

"It's a great joy. It's a fantastic feeling when you're playing this well," said Australian Open champion Djokovic.

NEW YORK, Sept 3 (Reuters) - Defending champion Serena Williams walloped Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro 6-0 6-0 to race into the semi-finals of the U.S. Open on Tuesday.

Top seed Williams served up the dreaded "double-bagel" in a quick-fire 52 minutes to set up a clash with fifth seed Li Na, who earlier became China's first U.S. Open semi-finalist by beating Russian Ekaterina Makarova.

"Honestly she's a great player," said Williams, blaming windy conditions for the Spaniard's plight on her 25th birthday.

"The conditions today were so tough. It was not her best tennis today."

The outcome may have been more about the world number one being at something close to her best, however.

Williams won 88 percent of her first serves, rifled in four aces, smacked 20 winners to three for her opponent, and won 53 points to just 18 for the 18th seed.

"I played really good. I was just more focused than anything," she added, stopping short of calling it her best. "I like to believe there is room for improvement."

It was only the second love-love victory in a U.S. Open women's quarter-final dating back to 1968, and first since Martina Navratilova subjected Manuela Maleeva of Bulgaria to the same embarrassment in 1989.

At 31, Williams is campaigning to become the oldest U.S. Open women's winner since tennis turned professional in 1968.

She has lost just 13 games from her five matches so far and said she has been balancing fun with work at Flushing Meadows.

"I'm having a blast this week," said Serena, who is also still alive in women's doubles with older sister Venus.

"I have just really been enjoying my matches. For me, I have to stay in that moment of fun, but intensity, but calm. If I can try to do those three things, it works out."

Suarez Navarro's consolation was a $325,000 check for being eliminated from her first U.S. Open quarter-final.

"I just want to go there and enjoy, but Serena was playing really, really good. I do everything I can," she said.

The Spaniard, who had ousted eighth-seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany in the fourth round, said the blustery conditions had made her task even more difficult.

"Serena is a strong player. When I play with the wind against me, I have no chance," said Suarez Navarro, who had hoped to rebound after the lightning-quick, 19-minute first set.

"I was thinking the situation can change, another set is a new set. But obviously, no."

NEW YORK, Sept 3 (Reuters) - Defending champion Andy Murray ground his way past Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin with a 6-7(5) 6-1 6-4 6-4 victory on Tuesday to reach the quarter-finals of the U.S. Open where he will face Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka.

Murray's consistency in the top tournaments is such that he has now reached the quarter-finals in each of his last 10 grand slam tournaments.

But Istomin, ranked 65th in the world, pushed Murray hard and the Wimbledon champion was glad to have made it through without a major scare.

"I was just very happy to get it done because he had chances at the end of the third set to get ahead," Murray told reporters.

"But I'm in the quarter-finals of a slam. That is not an easy thing to do and the matches are going to get tougher. I'll have to up my game," he said.

The Briton struggled to get out of the blocks in the first set and trailed 5-3 after two forehand errors handed Istomin the break in surprisingly cool and slightly gusty conditions.

Although Murray immediately broke back, he lost out in the tiebreak, with a double fault and a slice into the net allowing Istomin to serve out the set.

Istomin, decked out in luminous orange with similarly garish yellow-rimmed glasses, proved to be a determined opponent.

After levelling the match, Murray displayed some clear signs of frustration in the third set but finally took control by breaking Istomin in a marathon seventh game after the enterprising Uzbek had saved three break points.

TRICKY

There was never any doubt about who would win from then and the Scot wrapped up the match in a little over three hours.

Murray said the weather and wind in Arthur Ashe Stadium had been a factor in his slow start to the night match.

"It was extremely cold on the court, very windy. Often when you sort of heat up and then in between sets or if you have quite a long break, you cool down pretty quickly," he said.

"It was very, very different conditions to the last few days where it's been very humid and you have been sweating a lot," he said.

Istomin's decision to play the ball between his legs on three occasions, once when he had a perfectly playable shot, may have pleased the crowd but raised some eyebrows and surprised his opponent.

"I think it was 5-4 in the first set when he had a pretty easy shot. I personally wouldn't try something like that at that stage, but he did, and yeah, it was a bit surprising," he said.

Wawrinka, who beat Tomas Berdych on Tuesday, is up next for Murray and he knows he is in for a test.

"He has improved quite a lot this year, he has less weaknesses and is more experienced.

"He has a very good backhand, serves well, he's solid at the net and makes a lot of returns. He makes it tricky for you.

UPDATE: Pembroke shooting victim also a suspect; possible arson followed melee

Police are continuing to investigate the crimes in Pembroke — including multiple fights, a shooting and possible arson — that resulted in three people being injured Saturday nightat Martin Luther King Park during the two-day Pembroke Days festival.

The man whose headwas grazed by a bulletwhen two groups exchanged gunfire is also a shooting suspect, Kankakee County sheriff's police said Monday.

Police interviewed the manSaturday night, but he was uncooperative and has sincebeen airlifted to a Chicago-area hospital. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, but his exact condition was unknown as of 2 p.m. Monday.

A second victim was taken to the hospital for an abdominal wound. Initially, the man was believed to have been shot, but witnesses suggest he may have been stabbed or hit by a car, police said. The man was taken to hospital and was also uncooperative during police interviews.

Four people were taken into custody and questioned by police, but no arrests have been made.

UPDATE: At least 4 detained in Pembroke shootings but no charges yet

At least four people have been detained for questioning by police following Saturday night's shootings in Pembroke, but no charges have been filed as of 10 a.m. Monday morning.

Pembroke Days at Martin Luther King Park turned violent about 7:30 p.m, and two people were shot after a several fights broke out during the annual festival in Pembroke Township.  

Both gunshot victims were taken to the hospital, one with a graze wound to the head, Kankakee County sheriff's police said. The other victim was believed to have been shot in the abdomen. The injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

A third person, a woman, also suffered some sort of health problem during the fracas. It initially was believed she was hit by a car traveling at a slow speed, but it was later thought she may have fainted.

Multiple police agencies from across the county assisted breaking up the fights.

• Donovan schools will dismiss early every day this week, per WGFA on Twitter: Donovan Elementary School 2:15 p.m.; Donovan High School 2:30 p.m.

• Kankakee School District will dismiss at 1:10 p.m. Tuesday for grades seven through 12 and 2:30 p.m. for grades kindergarten through six. All of the district's after-school activities Tuesday are postponed, and there will be no Head Start or Bright Beginnings sessions.

UPDATE: Pembroke shooting victim also a suspect; possible arson followed melee

Police are continuing to investigate the crimes in Pembroke — including multiple fights, a shooting and possible arson — that resulted in three people being injured Saturday nightat Martin Luther King Park during the two-day Pembroke Days festival.

The man whose headwas grazed by a bulletwhen two groups exchanged gunfire is also a shooting suspect, Kankakee County sheriff's police said Monday.

Police interviewed the manSaturday night, but he was uncooperative and has sincebeen airlifted to a Chicago-area hospital. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, but his exact condition was unknown as of 2 p.m. Monday.

A second victim was taken to the hospital for an abdominal wound. Initially, the man was believed to have been shot, but witnesses suggest he may have been stabbed or hit by a car, police said. The man was taken to hospital and was also uncooperative during police interviews.

Four people were taken into custody and questioned by police, but no arrests have been made.

UPDATE: At least 4 detained in Pembroke shootings but no charges yet

At least four people have been detained for questioning by police following Saturday night's shootings in Pembroke, but no charges have been filed as of 10 a.m. Monday morning.

Pembroke Days at Martin Luther King Park turned violent about 7:30 p.m, and two people were shot after a several fights broke out during the annual festival in Pembroke Township.  

Both gunshot victims were taken to the hospital, one with a graze wound to the head, Kankakee County sheriff's police said. The other victim was believed to have been shot in the abdomen. The injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

A third person, a woman, also suffered some sort of health problem during the fracas. It initially was believed she was hit by a car traveling at a slow speed, but it was later thought she may have fainted.

Multiple police agencies from across the county assisted breaking up the fights.
