Tennis-Mirnyi closing in on U.S. Open mixed doubles hat-trick

NEW YORK, Sept 5 (Reuters) - Belarus veteran Max Mirnyi will attempt to win his third U.S. Open mixed doubles title 15-years after his first at Flushing Meadows on Friday.
Mirnyi and Czech Andrea Hlavackova will meet American Abigail Spears and Mexican Santiago Gonzalez on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The seventh-seeded Mirnyi and Hlavackova reached the final by defeating Wimbledon mixed doubles champions Kristina Mladenovic of France and Daniel Nestor of Canada 7-5 6-7 12-10.
The 36-year-old Mirnyi is chasing the 10th major doubles title of his career.
He partnered with Serena Williams to win the U.S. Open mixed doubles crown in 1998 and was triumphant again in 2007 with Victoria Azarenka.
Mirnyi's impressive resume also includes an mixed doubles Olympic gold medal he won with Azarenka in London last year.
Spears and Gonzalez defeated fifth seeds Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain and Bruno Soares of Brazil 6-3, 6-1.

Wimbledon - Nestor and Mladenovic win mixed doubles title
Canadian Nestor and Frenchwoman Mladenovic, the eighth seeds who were runners-up at last month's French Open, dropped the first set to the Brazilian and American pairing and saved two match points in the third set before claiming their first grand slam title together.
Wimbledon singles champion Marion Bartoli, a close friend of Mladenovic's, watched the match from the stands before heading off for the champions ball.
It was the 40-year-old Nestor's third grand slam mixed doubles title and he has also won eight major men's doubles crowns, including two at the All England Club, and the 2000 Olympic gold medal.
The 39-year-old Raymond has won four grand slam titles in women's doubles and seven in mixed, including last year's crown at Wimbledon in partnership with compatriot Mike Bryan who won the men's doubles title with his brother Bob on Saturday.
