Citizen Police Academy: Seeing city and police from the inside

Within minutes of getting buzzed into the locked police station I was running through the dark hallways and into an awaiting squad car.

It was 10 o'clock on a Saturday night, third shift was just starting, and there was a burglary happening in the alley behind North Fifth Avenue.

We sped over to the vacant building, but instead of catching a criminal we found a puppy. The little guy was put in the back of the squad car and hauled off to lock up — i.e. the Kankakee County Animal Control kennels — for the night.

A domestic battery arrest and an early morning bar fight, where a man with a bloodied face insisted he fell, wrapped up the night I spent watching Kankakee police officers in action.

Of all the classes I'd taken and all the assignments I'd received, this one was probably the most interesting.

Manteno police officer denies sexual assault allegations

The Manteno police officer accused of sexually assaulting a drunk woman is denying the allegations and is asking a federal judge to toss out the woman's lawsuit.

The officer, however, admits to giving the woman a ride back and forth between a Manteno gas station and the police station and then returning her car keys, according to court documents filed last week.

No criminal charges have been filed against the officer, Chadd Gagnon, or his partner, Jason Forbes.

In a lawsuit filed in May, Sarah Pyles, then a Joliet resident, alleges she performed oral sex on Gagnon, who then assaulted her outside the police station while Forbes watched. She had stopped at a gas station one night in August 2011; and suspecting she was too drunk to continue driving, called a friend to pick her up.

After a gas station attendant called police, the officers took Pyles' keys and brought her to the station to administer a Breathalyzer test.
