BK's Jacobs gets first top billing against Lorenzo

Brooklyn boxer Danny Jacobs always envisioned himself fighting for a world title in the main event of a major boxing card. While he hasn't reached that pinnacle yet, Jacobs has accomplished something else that rivals and even dwarfs that achievement - overcoming cancer.

And now he can cross the main event part off his bucket list.

Jacobs (25-1, 22 knockouts) will face former world title challenger Giovanni Lorenzo (32-5, 24 knockouts) on Aug. 19 in the main event at Best Buy Theater in Manhattan in a scheduled ten-round middleweight attraction in the series debut of "Golden Boy Live!" on Fox Sports 1.

Also on the card is an intriguing co-feature between the undefeated Bronx fighter Eddie Gomez, who's stepping up in class against Steve Upsher Chambers (24-2-1). The 2012 Olympian from Staten Island, Marcus Browne (5-0), is also in action on the televised portion of the show.

Danny Jacobs is 3-0 since coming back from cancer.

The 24-card series, promoted by Golden Boy, could have as many as four shows take place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn over the next year.

After plotting a methodical course since being diagnosed with spinal cancer in 2011, Jacobs is stepping up in class with his selection of Lorenzo as his next opponent. He has fought three times since making his comeback, beating a series of decent but not overwhelming foes. But he feels ready to increase his level of opposition on his journey to another crack at the title after stumbling in his previous bid to unseat Dmitry Pirog when he was stopped in five rounds in their 2010 bout.

"Giovanni for me now is a great test," Jacobs said on Tuesday at a press conference in Manhattan. "We can't just jump into the world championship off of someone like my last opponent. He's a great step-up and if we can have a step up before we go for any world champion that will be good for me. I'm enjoying this. I have my own main event. Most fighters can't say that."

The undefeated Gomez (14-0, 9 knockouts) insists his bout with Chambers will not be a test, since "he never really fought anybody but Luis Collazo," Gomez said on Tuesday." The two are fighting at a catch-weight of 150 pounds on the same week that Gomez will turn 21 (on Aug. 25). "It's another regular day for me in the ring," Gomez said. "I'm going to come prepared. I like the numbers- 24-2. I'm putting on a show regardless. I just want to prove that he's a nobody."

Claude Staten Jr., a bantamweight from Brooklyn, will try to move to 2-0 on the show. Another undefeated boxer, Emanuel Gonzalez (11-0, 7 knockouts) of the Bronx, recently signed with Golden Boy Promotions and will make his debut under the Golden Boy banner on the show.
