Schools discussing post-Labor Day start date

The sweltering heat is creating a few hot heads in schools, but the cool assessment by some area administrators is to find a solution — possibly starting the school year after Labor Day.

The idea has boiled up as area superintendents consider how best to deal with the current heat wave.

Several area school districts have released students early this week as temperatures have soared into the 90s. The heat index reached 101 degrees in Kankakee on Tuesday afternoon and 96 on Wednesday. The heat index is a measure of heat and humidity taken together, according to the National Weather Service.

Not every school was dismissed early, however. "We're all getting a lot of heat. Excuse the pun," said Rich Decman, Herscher Community Unit School District 2 superintendent, who has fielded several complaints from parents about keeping a regular schedule this week. "But it didn't get as hot as it was predicted and I think we made a good decision.
