Alec Anderson's discipline, honesty showed he cared

Whenever someone needed a champion they could find one in Alec Anderson. In return, the former Kankakee High School football coach, who died last Wednesday, would inspire his coaches and players to become champions.

On Tuesday, dozens of his former athletes and coaches paid their respects to his family and to his lifetime of achievements at Lax Mortuary in Kankakee, many traveling an hour from Bolingbrook, Homewood and Flossmoor where he served as an athletic director. Anderson was 54.

Karen Anderson, his wife, said the family is "amazed" by the kind words and support they've received.

"I want everyone to know how much he loved his athletes and that he was a very loving father and husband," Anderson said. "He loved his athletes. He would have done anything for anyone."

Anderson's words were echoed by those who came to pay their respects.

Among them were athletes and coaches not only from Kankakee, but from Homewood-Flossmoor High School, where he filled the athletic director's post and from Bolingbrook High School, where he formerly served in the same capacity.
