Will County Fair not quite the same this year

There were no Friday and Saturday night demolition derbies for the first Will County Fair. A draft horse pull, likely, but no demo derbies.

There were only 8,000 cars in the U.S. in 1904. At times this week it will seem like there are that many in the parking lots at Peotone for the 110th fair.

The fair opens Wednesday and runs through Sunday.

It will be a fair with an absence — the first in 90 years without the physical presence of Milbert Johnson, who devoted two-thirds of his life to organizing the annual celebration of agriculture, home economics and family fun.

Undoubtedly, however, Johnson will be at the fair, on the lips of the many who knew him and benefited from his leadership over at least 60 years as a fair board member, the bulk of them as board president.

Mr. Johnson, who farmed 400 acres near Peotone, died Jan.
