BMX tracks coming to Kankakee

Children of the 80s will remember Excitebike, the motocross video game that let players build unrealistic obstacle courses only to crash their avatars with impunity.

Fun, no doubt. But not even close to the real thing. Now imagine a dirt bike without an engine.

And what you found was a new generation of bicycle riders taking to a sport that first became popular in the 1970s.

And today, it's taking off again.

"I know it's not everyone's cup of tea," said Roy Collins, executive director of the Kankakee Valley Park District. "But it is pretty cool. The way we look at it, as many things as we can provide for the community, we want to do."

The latest ask? A bike racing track.

Collins said it should be open after Labor Day, right next to the skate park in Washington Park on Kankakee's north side.
