Grant Park picks veteran cop as new police chief

Grant Park officials are hoping Jeffery Cavender, the village's new police chief, will help them restore public confidence in the police department. The village board appointed Cavender to the post unanimously last month after receiving numerous recommendations in his favor from the local law enforcement community.

Cavender, 50, recently retired from the Orland Park Police Department following a 23-year career there. He resides in Momence, where he is raising a family.

"Everybody wants to do the right thing, and I want to do the right thing," Cavender said. "I'm incredibly honored to be entrusted with taking the police department in a new direction."

On Aug. 5, he officially took leadership of the police department, which has drawn controversy under the leadership of its two previous chiefs. Mayor Robert Malkowski told The Daily Journal he believes "without a doubt" Cavender will be able to move the department beyond its troubled recent history.
