Cynthia Pederson named first female regional inspector for NRC

Cynthia D. Pederson, former resident inspector at the Dresden Station nuclear power plant in Grundy County, has been named administrator of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's seven-state Region III office at Lisle.

She is first woman ever named to be a regional inspector for the federal agency.

Pederson will oversee a staff of about 225 in regulating 15 commercial nuclear power plants and more than 1,200 other nuclear material licensees in seven Midwestern states.

She took over on Monday from Charles A. Casto, who retired.

A chemical engineer by training, Pederson joined the NRC as a resident inspector at Dresden in 1983 and moved to Palisades nuclear plant at Covert, Mich., two years later.

She advanced through the ranks to become deputy regional administrator in 2009.

"Cynthia D. Pederson is exceptionally well qualified to lead Region III in carrying out our mission of protecting people and the environment," Bill Borchardt, the NRC's executive director for operations stated in announcing her latest promotion.
