Burglary suspect flushed from Kankakee storm sewer

Kankakee police had to go underground to capture the more elusive half of a two-man burglary crew this morning.

"One suspect was apprehended immediately, but the other man fled, trying to escape down a [storm water drainage system]," Kankakee Deputy Chief John Gerard said.

Yoetis S. Tanzy Jr., 22, of Kankakee, was arrested about an hour after he tried evade police by running through a spillway near the intersection of Chestnut Street and Entrance Avenue.

The chase began after police were called to the 500 block of North Schuyler Avenue shortly after 5 a.m. for a burglary. Officers found that the rear door of a residence had been forced open and copper pipping in the home had been cut with pruning shears.

Willie S. Hampton Jr., 22, of Kankakee, Tanzy's alleged accomplice, was arrested immediately.
