Within minutes of getting buzzed into the locked police station I was running through the dark hallways and into an awaiting squad car.
It was 10 o'clock on a Saturday night, third shift was just starting, and there was a burglary happening in the alley behind North Fifth Avenue.
We sped over to the vacant building, but instead of catching a criminal we found a puppy. The little guy was put in the back of the squad car and hauled off to lock up — i.e. the Kankakee County Animal Control kennels — for the night.
A domestic battery arrest and an early morning bar fight, where a man with a bloodied face insisted he fell, wrapped up the night I spent watching Kankakee police officers in action.
Of all the classes I'd taken and all the assignments I'd received, this one was probably the most interesting.
